ALVIN SARGENT, son of Capt. John Sargent, is a clergyman of the Baptist order, now living at Holderness, N. H. He has been several times a member of the Legislature.
1. MERRILL COBURN came from Dracut, Mass., date uncertain, and settled in that part of Grantham afterwards annexed to Cornish. He was b. May 17, 1753; m. -, Abigail . b. July 12, 1751, and d. SOLOMON L. POWERS, brother of the above, after following the business of stonemason at Baltimore and elsewhere, finally became an extensive farmer at Gettysburg, Pa.; and during the famous battle a portion of the rebel army was stationed in his yard. His brothers, ARA and LARNARD, were successful farmers. The former died at Charlestown in 1865, leaving quite a fortune.
EZEKIEL POWERS, son of Ezekiel and Hannah Hall Powers, was born in 1771, and was the first male child born in town. At the age of nineteen he married Susan Rice, and subsequently Lydia Lane and Lois Barden, and had twenty-one children-four sons and seventeen daughters; fifteen of the latter grew to womanhood, and were characterized by those qualities which distinguish the Powers family. Like his father he was remarkable for great physical power. At the age of eighty he weighed 265 pounds. He had a great memory, and was a lover of fun.

Elias W. Pike, of Goshen, an ex-member of the New Hampshire legislature and a veteran of the Civil War, was born in this town, October 12, 1838, son of Wilson S. and Julia G. (Martin) Pike. His grandfather, Jarvis Pike, who resided in Newport, N.H., was a prosperous farmer. Wilson S. Pike, who was reared to farm life in Newport, removed when about twenty-one years old to Goshen, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits for the greater part of his active period, and died in September, 1866. EPHRAIM KEMPTON, the father of the Kemptons, came early to Croydon and purchased some four hundred acres of land, covering all the grounds where the Flat is now situated, and built near the residence of Capt. Nathan Hall. He never attained to great wealth, and was unassuming in his manners.
JOHN HALL, son of James Hall, Esq., and grandson of James Hall, Sr., was born in October, 1813; studied medicine with his uncle Albina Hall; graduated at Brunswick, Me., and commenced the practice of his profession at Newark, Ohio, where he died. His two daughters, JULIA and MARY, are both well educated and accomplished teachers.

5. SOLOMON5 CHASE (Samuel4, Daniel3, Moses2, Aquilla1) b. Sept. 1, 1742; In. (by his father) June 15, 1767, Sarah March, b. May 18, 1744, and d. Oct. 6, 1840, aged 96. He was a physician of considerable note and one of the first in town. Settled at first in Walpole as a physician but came to Cornish with his family before the Revolution. 12. CHARLES7 CHASE (Samuel6-5-4, Daniel3, Moses2 Aquilla1) was b. May 7, 1783; m. Dec. 19, 1816, Olive Colston of Weathersfield, Vt. He was naturally a very capable man, but it is said he became ruined by habits of intoxication. His wife obtained a divorce in 1836 and guardians were appointed over him the remainder of his life. (V) Frederick, son of Lieutenant Joshua Locke, was born at Westboro, June 6. 1757, and married (first) in 1793, at Charlestown, New Hampshire, Anna Farwell, who died in 1804. He married (second), July 15, 1805, Lucy Graves, of Washington, New Hampshire. He prepared for college at Leicester Academy, but instead of going to college enlisted in the American army shortly after the revolution began, anti remained in the army during most of the war. LEISTER HALL ELLIOT, Son of Dea. Ezra Elliot, was born August 1, 1835; fitted for college at Essex, Vt.; graduated at the University of Vermont, at Burlington, August, 1861, and at the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, June, 1864. He was licensed to preach by the Brooklyn Congregational Association, April 6, 1864; acted as pastor of the Congregational Church at Colchester, Vt., for one year, and was ordained as pastor of the Congregational Church at Winooski, Vt., May 2, 1866. October 2d, 1866, he was married to Miss Lois M. Johnson, of Greensboro, Vt.

JACOB BEAL, son of John and Catharine (Kimball) Beal, was b. in Plainfield Dec. 16, 1815, the youngest of twelve children. He remained at home until of age, when he went to Mass. and was employed by his brother, George, on a steamboat running from Boston to Hingham.
