WILLIAM WALLACE KIDDER, son of Amos and Lucinda Barton Kidder, was born Aug. 11, 1845, studied medicine with Williams Barton, M. D.; was with Capt. Ira McL. Barton, as orderly in the 5th Reg. N. H. Vols., and also in the 9th Reg. N. H. Vols.

Biographical Sketch of Samuel Morse, Esq.

SAMUEL MORSE, Esq., a native of Dublin, N. H., graduated at Dartmouth College in 1811, and studied law with Hon. Geo. B. Upham, of Claremont. He came to Croydon in 1815, and opened the first and only law office ever in town. He was Representative for the year 1834, and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1850. He died Jan 1, 1865, aged 81 years.

Biographical Sketch of Solomon L. Powers

SOLOMON L. POWERS, brother of the above, after following the business of stonemason at Baltimore and elsewhere, finally became an extensive farmer at Gettysburg, Pa.; and during the famous battle a portion of the rebel army was stationed in his yard. His brothers, ARA and LARNARD, were successful farmers. The former died at Charlestown in 1865, leaving quite a fortune.

Lived in Cornish till 1900, and then rem. to Arctic, R. I. Have recently rem. to Charlestown. A farmer and worker in leather, also a florist. One child: 1. OSCAR DEANE, b. Aug. 22, 1894.

Moses F. Knowlton, a wellknown livery man of Sunapee, N.H., was born in this town, July 24, 1845, a son of Dennis G. Knowlton. JOHN WHEELER, youngest son of Col. Nathaniel Wheeler, was born July 1, 1818. He had a clear intellect and scholarly turn of mind, but died young. Once taking a decided dislike to a dissipated, ugly Captain, on board whose ship he had embarked for his health, he ran away and spent a long time on the Island of Juan Fernandez, subsisting as he could, and with Selkirk immortal could say, ” I am monarch of all I survey.”

William Hall, the enterprising proprietor of Langdon Creamery, Langdon, N.H., and dealer in butter, cream, milk, eggs, chickens, pork, and other farm and dairy products, was born in Claremont, this State, March 23, 1850. He is a son of Jonathan and Caroline L. (Leet) Hall and a descendant of one of the oldest families in Sullivan County. Fay, editor-in-chief of the National Eagle, a bright and thoroughly up-to-date newspaper published in Claremont, was born in Richmond, Vt., November 30, 1830, son of Captain Nathan and Polly (Colby) Fay. Stephen Fay, his great-great-grandfather, was an early settler in Bennington, Vt., and was the father of eight children. William Cant Sturoc, “the bard of Sunapee ,” as he is often called, was born November 4, 1822, in a humble, straw-thatched cottage in Arbroath, Scotland, son of Francis Sturoc and his wife, Ann (Cant) Sturoc. Doubtless, the poetic genius has descended to him from his paternal great-grandfather, James Sturoc, who wrote a book of “Hymns and Spiritual Songs,” and died in Panbride in 1750. EDWARD BROWN, son of Briant Brown, a worthy farmer and a man of good judgment, was born January, 1818. He has for a long time taken a deep interest in the agricultural affairs of the State and County. In 1866 he was one of the Committee on the State Agricultural College, whose duty it was to report to the Legislature a suitable plan, location and other matters relating to the State College.
