Biography of Capt. George M. Jones
Capt. George M. Jones, born October 19, 1836, in Shelby County, Tennessee, was the son of Henry F. and Mary Jones. After early employment in dry goods and general merchandising, he enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, eventually serving as quartermaster. Discharged due to illness, he later re-enlisted and participated in recruiting until the war’s end. Returning to Springfield, Missouri, he settled on a substantial property, engaged in real estate, and contributed to education and community service. Capt. Jones married Elizabeth Campbell in 1868 and has three children.
