Southern Ute Reservation

In September 1890, Special Agent George D. Meston reported on the Southern Ute Indians residing on their 1,094,400-acre reservation in Colorado. The tribes included Kapoti, Muachi, and Wiminuchi Ute. The Utes exhibited a strong suspicion toward government dealings, particularly regarding a proposed relocation to Utah. Despite farming efforts by a few, the majority engaged in stock raising, facing challenges due to harsh winters. The tribe’s customs, health issues, and reliance on government rations were noted, alongside their social structure and resistance to educational initiatives.
