Biographical Sketch of W. H. Kirkland
W. H. Kirkland was born on July 12, 1832, in Petersburg, Virginia, and emigrated to Arizona post-Gadsden Purchase. He raised the first American flag in Tucson in 1856 and was the first white man to marry in the territory in 1860. Kirkland engaged in mining and ranching near Walnut Grove and later settled in the Salt River Valley. His daughter, Mrs. Wayne Ritter, was born in one of Phoenix’s earliest homes. He passed away in Winkleman, Arizona, on January 19, 1911, at 78.
