Congaree Tribe
The Congaree were a small Siouan tribe in South Carolina, associated closely with the Catawba. They inhabited the Santee River area and engaged in the Yamasi War, leading to their eventual integration with the Catawba by the mid-18th century. The tribe faced significant population decline due to conflicts and smallpox. Notably, they maintained a distinct dialect and cultural identity until their incorporation. Despite their challenges, the Congaree were described as a friendly and physically attractive people.
