Slave Narrative of Charles Lee Dalton

Charles Lee Dalton, 93, reflects on his life as an ex-slave from Madison, North Carolina. Born on Lee Dalton’s plantation, he worked as a hoe boy and plowman, experiencing both care and punishment. After the Civil War, he settled in Madison, raising eleven children and working at a local mill until age prevented him. Dalton, who never learned to read, was active in his church community. Now living with his son, he enjoys a comfortable life, cared for by family amidst cherished memories of his past.
