Cove, Oregon William Lewis Hallmark, 86, of Portland and formerly of Cove died June 14. Mr. Hallmark was born July 29, 1919, in Cove. He graduated from Cove High School and helped run the family store. On Dec. 24, 1937, he married Winifred Mae Slauson, and attended Oregon State University and Eastern Oregon Normal School. He studied engineering and put himself through school by working for the Forest Service. He celebrated his 21st birthday while fighting a forest fire. Wallowa, Oregon Nicholas Christoff died March 5, 2006 in Portland. He was 68. Mr. Christoff was born April 11, 1937 in Denver, Colo. He enjoyed fishing on the river and visiting with his many friends. He is survived by his mother, Sonya Christoff and his sister, Sandra Farrington of Wallowa, three nephews and nine great nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life will be held at the IOOF Hall in Wallowa March 18 at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Wallowa Memorial Hospital, care of Bollmans Funeral Home. La Grande, Oregon Harold Leon Griffith, 40, of Portland and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 19. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland United Church of Christ in Portland. Lauretta Cross, of Milton-Freewater and a former resident of Wallowa County, died July 9, 2007, at Walla Walla General Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. She was 85. Mrs. Cross was born June 19,1922, in La Grande to James Everett and Etta Rebecca Berg Rachau. The family resided on Pumpkin Ridge, outside of Elgin. They later moved to Minam, where Mrs. Cross attended school through the second grade.
