Biography of Captain James W. Sayward
Captain James W. Sayward, born in 1815 in Thomaston, Maine, has spent nearly forty years contributing to California and the Pacific Coast. A descendant of an old colonial family, he began his career as a ship carpenter before venturing into seafaring. After years of maritime endeavors, including a harrowing voyage aboard the ship Aquila, he settled in California, engaging in horticulture and orange-growing. A Republican and Masonic member, Sayward was actively involved in local politics and community affairs. He is the adoptive father of two children and a long-time member of the Calvinistic Baptist Church.
