Arrivals, Incidents and Anecdotes of Baker County Oregon
In July 1862, Joseph Kinnison plowed the first furrow in Baker County, cultivating forty acres and later profiting $4,000 from his crops after a frost scare. As Auburn grew rapidly with new settlers, its first sawmill was established, and a city government was formed. Among the early residents were Thomas Smith and D.B. Schofield, who later served in various official capacities. In a notable incident, two men died from poisoned flour, leading to a quick trial and execution of the suspect, showcasing the community’s commitment to justice in a lawless time.
