Private Link Williams served in Company C of the 167th Infantry Regiment, part of the 42nd Division. Born to N. S. Williams in Pineville, North Carolina, he entered military service on April 15, 1918. After training at Camp Jackson and Camp Sevier, he was deployed to France on July 6, 1918. Williams sustained a gunshot wound on the Verdun Front on September 12, 1918, and returned to the United States on November 29, 1918, being discharged at Camp Wadsworth on January 17, 1919.
Private Thomas Alfred Sweatt served in Company E of the 106th Infantry during World War I. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Sweatt from Pineville, North Carolina. After enlisting on August 5, 1918, in Charlotte, he trained at Camp Wadsworth before deploying to France on September 15. He participated in the Verdun Front from October 6 to October 20, 1918, and returned to the U.S. via Brest, arriving on March 6, 1919, and was discharged from Camp Lee on April 4.
Private Claud T. Earnhardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Earnhardt from Pineville, N.C., enlisted on June 24, 1917. After training at Ft. Ben Harrison, he sailed to France on November 18, 1917, where he participated in numerous significant battles, including Woevre, Soissons, and the Meuse-Argonne. He served with the Army of Occupation from November 12, 1918, to April 28, 1919, and returned to the United States on June 1, 1919, before being mustered out on June 7 at Camp Mills.
Wagoner Downs, serving in the 6th Company of the 1st Corps Artillery Park, was the son of S. W. Downs from Pineville, N.C. He enlisted on March 7, 1918, trained at Camp Jackson, and was deployed to France shortly after. He participated in significant battles including the Champagne-Marne and Aisne-Marne offensives, and the Oise-Aisne and Meuse-Argonne offensives, sustaining gas injuries. Downs returned to the U.S. on August 4, 1919, and was discharged on August 9.
