Red Cloud (1822-1909) was a prominent chief of the Oglala Teton Sioux, recognized for his leadership and resistance during the U.S. expansion into Sioux territory. He gained reputation through his opposition to government projects threatening buffalo hunting grounds, notably the construction of roads in the 1860s. His successful advocacy led to the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868, securing Sioux lands. A warrior and statesman, Red Cloud remained a respected figure throughout his life, promoting peace while navigating the complexities of Native American relations with the government.
