Known for her compassion, she aided those in need throughout her life. Her funeral, conducted by Rev. S. E. Eels, took place at the Union cemetery on January 15, 1918.

Hayes, James Jonathan – Obituary

James J. Johnnie Hayes, aged 98, passed away on February 23, 1977, at a local nursing home. Born on February 22, 1879, in Nebraska, he moved to the Thrall area in 1883, where he lived for 80 years. Hayes was a farmer until 1967 and was married to Dorothy Curtis until her death in 1972. He is survived by two daughters, a brother, seven grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Evenson Chapel.

A pioneer and early builder of Pendleton, he opened a drug business and became involved in local governance, serving as county surveyor and a city council member. Elected a joint state senator in 1888, he contributed to the region’s development and established a successful real estate business. He and his wife, Minnie, have three children.
