John F. Hineline was born on April 7, 1855, in Fremont, Ohio, to Hugh B. and Rebecca Hineline. He was one of fourteen children, with many siblings living in or around Fremont. Educated at local schools and the Western Reserve Normal, Hineline moved west in 1874, teaching in country schools while working as a carpenter. He married Emma Piersol in 1879, and they had six children. A Republican and active in local organizations, he currently resides in West Freeport and is a member of the First Baptist Church.
