The Haines area lost one of its pioneer citizens Sunday, July 14, 1991, when Omer Oliver Maxwell died at a Portland hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Maxwell was born December 1, 1899 at the Maxwell home in the Muddy Creek area, the son of James O. and Nancy A. Hand Maxwell. He graduated from Muddy Creek High May 1917. He attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon and Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon. He married Pansy Long Oct. 9, 1928, in Baker City, Oregon. Pioneer Passes William Long, 74 William O. Long, 74, pioneer and life-long resident of Baker county, died Sunday at his home, 213 1/2 Third street, following an illness. Mr. Long was born April 7, 1880, in Muddy Creek. He had resided in Baker several years. He was a retired farmer. Gas From Car Brings Death To McCullough Frank McCullough, retired farmer of Haines, was killed by monoxide gas from an automobile in the garage at his home there shortly before noon last Friday. He is said to have been in the closed garage about ten minutes when found by Fred Shanklin, who has been living at the McCullough home all winter. Shanklin heard the car running in the garage and opened the doors to find McCullough dead. Mr. McCullough has been suffering from heart trouble for some time.
