Slave Narrative of Kitty Hill
Kitty Hill, born near Petersburg, Virginia, recounts her life as an enslaved person until the end of the Civil War. She was sold to Isaac Long and moved to North Carolina with her mother and siblings after the war. Kitty remembers stories told by her mother about the harshness of slavery, the dangers from patrollers, and the presence of the Ku Klux Klan. While some enslaved individuals had relatively good experiences, Kitty reflects on the overall brutality and difficulties of slavery.
