Four Perish In Burning House Mrs. Shelts And Three Children Lost In Fire At Evans Evans, Oregon An explosion in a heating stove into which kerosene oil had been thrown to start a fire cost the lives of Mrs. J.W. Shelts and her three small children at Evans early Saturday morning, February 7. Mr. Shelts and Theodore Frost, brother of Mrs. Shelts, were dangerously burned but are expected to recover. Biggs, a resident of Wallowa County for nearly 30 years, died last Sunday at Evens. The funeral was held in the Evans Church at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 22 and was attended by a large gathering of friends of the family. Rev. Evert Smits conducted the services. Mr. M.L. Johnson, formerly a well known figure at Lostine, died in Los Angeles, California, on January 31st. He had been married about a week when operated on for appendicitis, dying the next day. Mr. Johnson was reputed to have been a wealthy man at one time but the money went easy as it came and died with his fortune all gone. Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon Eliza Crossler Services Held Eliza Mary Crossler passed away at her home in Walla Walla November 28. She was born February 2, 1878, at Sweet Home, Oregon. Her parents, George and Mary Hearing, with their family, came to Wallowa County in 1884, settling in the hill country east of Lostine where they farmed many years and endured the hardships of the early pioneers. Lostine, Wallowa County, Oregon Ida Fisher, of Lostine, died Jan. 6, 1963 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Susan and John Graham, she was born in Elgin on July 25, 1890. In 1958 she married Guy Fisher in La Grande, Oregon, who survives her. She was a member of the Christian Church and Lostine Rebekah Lodge No. 158. A Celebration of Life service was held for Ethel T. Crow at the Lostine Presbyterian Church on April 12, 2005. This followed a graveside service and interment at the Lostine Cemetery, under the direction of Bollman Funeral Home. Mrs. Crow died April 8, 2005, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise at the age of 87. Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Dec. 27, 1917, she was the daughter of George and Sara (Fleishner) Theobald and the youngest of seven children. Lostine, Oregon Lowell Marvin Courtney died Aug. 14, 2007, at Alpine House in Joseph of natural causes. He was 92. Mr. Courtney was born April 5, 1915, in Lostine to Edith Pearl Shelts and Harley M. Courtney. On March 30, 1935, he married Gladys M. Bowen in Baker City. The couple lived and worked on the family farm then bought a part of it. Mr. Courtney worked as a farmer, carpenter and mechanic. The farm became a century farm in 1997. In 2001 they sold the farm after 86 years and moved to Enterprise. Russel Gesner Childers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Childers, passed away July 5 after an illness which lasted several months.
