Service Held For Pioneer The community was greatly saddened Monday evening when it was learned that an esteemed citizen, N.J. Cook of Lostine, had passed away. Few pioneers in Wallowa County had a wider circle of friends than did the Cook brothers who came to Wallowa County in the ’70s. Eight of these brothers and one sister lived many years near Lostine. They were: William, Jariel, Milton, John, T.R., Mack, N.J., Frank, one half-brother, Walter, and Mary Hammack. Another sister, Jane, died at Dallas, Ore. Harley Floyd Caudle was born Dec. 23, 1904, in Lostine, and died on April 23, 1997, in Enterprise at the age of 92. Harley was the son of Berkley V. and Carrie Viola Hammack Caudle. As a youngster he attended Lostine school until the age of 10 when he left home to go to work. He then worked for his room and board, milking cows, doing farm chores and continuing to go to school. A Celebration of Life service was held for Ethel T. Crow at the Lostine Presbyterian Church on April 12, 2005. This followed a graveside service and interment at the Lostine Cemetery, under the direction of Bollman Funeral Home. Mrs. Crow died April 8, 2005, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise at the age of 87. Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Dec. 27, 1917, she was the daughter of George and Sara (Fleishner) Theobald and the youngest of seven children. Goebel, Gertrude Anna Huber Gertrude Anna Huber was born in Wisconsin, September 14, 1862, where she spent her childhood and in 1881 was united in marriage to Peter Goebel. Four children were born in Wisconsin. In 1888 the family came to Wallowa County settling above Lostine on what is known as the Collins place. Lostine, Wallowa County, Oregon Fatal Accident J. F. Burleigh died at his home in this city Sunday morning, of concussion of the brain, the result of being thrown from a buggy. He was returning from Enterprise Friday evening about six o’clock and when near the limits of the town of Lostine his team became frightened and ran away. Mr. M.L. Johnson, formerly a well known figure at Lostine, died in Los Angeles, California, on January 31st. He had been married about a week when operated on for appendicitis, dying the next day. Mr. Johnson was reputed to have been a wealthy man at one time but the money went easy as it came and died with his fortune all gone. Joseph, Oregon Robert Richard “Dick” Chandler died at Wallowa Valley Care Center on Jan. 29, 2006. He was 77. Mr. Chandler was born on June 29,1928 in Denver, Colo., to Oscar B. Chandler and Gladys G. Ballantyne Chandler. Shortly after his birth he moved to Joseph with his parents and sister Frances.
