Biographical Sketch of Matthew W. Mitchell

Matthew W. Mitchell, born in Missouri in 1843, emigrated to the Pacific Northwest with his family in 1852, settling in Douglas County. He was educated in Roseburg and began teaching in 1866. After marrying Josephine Stevens in 1870, he moved to Grande Ronde, where he became involved in farming and stock-raising. Elected to the Oregon legislature in 1876, he later remarried in 1882. Currently, he resides in The Cove, Oregon, where he farms and raises graded stock, earning respect and influence in the community.

Shoemaker, Huldah – Obituary

On December 20, 1888, Mrs. Huldah Shoemaker passed away in Cove, Union County, Oregon, at the age of 27. Born in Wasco County, she later moved to Douglas County with her family. Huldah married William Shoemaker on May 2, 1886, after forming a bond during her visit to Cove. She is remembered fondly by those who knew her and leaves behind her husband and two small children. William expressed gratitude to those who supported them during her illness.

Biography of Alva Lee

Alva Lee was born at Looking Glass, Douglas County, Oregon, Jan 19, 1859, and came to Coos County in September, 1874, and settled on the North Fork of the Coquille River and moved to Bandon, Oct. 15, 1896. He has been master of several steamers, and he is a successful navigator.
