Philip Dorse Schnebly, 84, longtime Fairview District rancher and member of a pioneer Kittitas Valley family, died Wednesday [April 17, 1968] in Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. He was born July 19, 1883, in the Fairview District, the son of pioneer residents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Henry Schnebly. He attended the Fairview and Nanum grade schools, a prep school in Ellensburg and continued his studies at Washington State College. Abe L. Cooke Dies in Seattle Abe L. Cooke, 47, of Yakima, a former Ellensburg resident and a veteran of the first World War, died Wednesday in the Marine hospital in Seattle after an illness of several months. He was born April 27, 1897, at Coberg, Ore., the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Cooke, Kittitas valley pioneers. The Cooke family returned to this valley while he was still an infant and he received his education in valley schools. Bertha M. Godbey, 95, a longtime Ellensburg resident, died Friday [September 19, 1986] evening at Gold Leaf Convalescent Home. She was born in Hawkins, Tenn., on Dec. 15, 1890, a daughter of John P. and Phoebe (Derrick) Looney. She and Bert Godbey were married in Yakima on Aug. 22, 1936. The family home was at 504 S. Gladys Benz, 81, of 521 N. Date St., Toppenish, died Tuesday in Central Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 19, 1901, in Ellensburg to Oscar and Ella McEwen. Mrs. Benz was raised by Lou and Martha Evans and lived in the Toppenish area 72 years. She married Paul Benz in Seattle April 4, 1923, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Thelma Ferguson Maxson, 80, of Ellensburg, died Monday at Royal Vista Care Center following a lingering illness [died February 13, 1990]. She was born in Ellensburg on October 23, 1909, one of two daughters of George H. and Mayme (Wyatt) Ferguson. Services at the IOOF Cemetery will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for Odie N. Phelps, former Ellensburg resident who died Friday March 13, 1959 in Seattle. He has lived in Seattle for the past 16 years. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Seattle, a son, Frank Phelps of Ellensburg, a brother, Gilbert of Seattle and four grandchildren. Hallie Dell Uebelacker, 88, of Ellensburg passed away on Thursday, September 5, 1996 at Kittitas Valley Regional Rehab Center in Ellensburg. She was born in Ellensburg, Washington on October 27, 1907, a daughter of William Thomas and Margaret Olive (Ferguson) Montgomery. Hallie’s mother’s family arrived in the Kittitas Valley in 1872, crossing Snoqualmie Pass in wagons and on horseback.
