Cooke, Jay – Obituary

The people of this community were surprised and shocked to learn that Jay Cooke had died Monday [July 22, 1907] night at his home about twelve miles northeast of town. He only took to his bed last Saturday, but he was unable to combat the fearful ailment—gall stones—and passed away as stated. The young man was a native of the valley and few farmers were better known. He was of a genial disposition, industrious and temperate in his habits, and his death is a distinct loss to the community. Norma Prater, 91, former Hanson Road resident, died Wednesday [February 14, 1979] at a local nursing home. She was born June 28, 1887, in Leadville, Colo. She was awarded a scholarship in the field of medicine, science or law to the University of Colorado at Denver, but was unable to accept the scholarship and went into teaching for several years prior to her marriage. She came to Ellensburg in 1908 from Colorado, and she and Jess Prater were married in Ellensburg on Feb. 14, 1915. Naomi H. Charlton, 76, Rt. 5, Ellensburg, died Wednesday [November 3, 1982] at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. She was born in Heartland, Wash., on Jan. 15, 1906. She graduated from Ellensburg Normal School in 1928 and taught school for 2 years at Heartland. She and Glenn Charlton were married in Heartland on May 18, 1930. They came to the Kittitas Valley from LaGrande, Ore., in 1953. Mr. Charlton died July 2, 1961. The death of Mrs. Rebecca Jane Hayes, wife of Sanford Hayes, occurred on Sunday morning [May 25, 1913], after a lingering illness. The funeral services took place on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Kittitas Baptist Church, Mr. Hanson of the Church of Latter Day Saints officiating, and were attended by a large number of friends of the deceased. Jesse Cates, 79, well-known Ellensburg resident for a quarter of a century, died at the Valley Hospital last night. He was born in Campbell County, Tennessee, August 27, 1858, and was married to Nannie Harrell of Rogersville, Tenn., February 28, 1904. For many years he was a federal revenue inspector in Tennessee. He had lived in the valley since 1913, residing at 301 Washington Street. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nannie Cates; a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Baker of Knoxville, Tenn., a grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma Ferguson Maxson, 80, of Ellensburg, died Monday at Royal Vista Care Center following a lingering illness [died February 13, 1990]. She was born in Ellensburg on October 23, 1909, one of two daughters of George H. and Mayme (Wyatt) Ferguson. She and John Maxson were married in Tacoma in 1935. they lived in various locations throughout the United States until 1983 when they returned to Ellensburg to make their permanent home.
