Hackler, Clemma Aileen – Obituary

La Grande, Oregon Clemma Aileen Hackler, 81, of La Grande died Nov. 20 at her home. A memorial service will be held at later time. Arrangements are under the direction of Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Mrs. Hackler was born March 6, 1925, to William and Eunice Hughes Barber in Mankato, Kan. Her family moved to Steamboat Springs, Colo., where they lived for a short time before moving to Hermiston. She married Clarence Hackler and the couple raised watermelons in Hermiston before moving to Weston, where they logged. Mrs. Hackler cooked at numerous restaurants over the years. John Burns, County Treasurer, was born in Delaware County, N. Y., and September 4, 1831. Removed to Iowa, then returned to New York; soon after again moved, this time to Jewell County, Kan., in 1872. Was elected County Treasurer in 1873 and re-elected in 1875, and again elected in 1879, and still holds the office. Is a member of the Masonic fraternity? Was married in Delaware, N. Y. in July, 1864, to Miss Jane Love, and is the father of two children – Edgar A. and Lulu.

J. W. Green, furniture dealer, was born in Clinton County, Ohio, November 21, 1844. Moved to Iowa in 1868; came to Jewell County, Kan., in the fall of 1873, and took a homestead five miles northwest of Burr Oak, and is now the owner of 280 acres of land. He went into the furniture business in Burr Oak in 1881, under the firm name of Green & Carpenter. He held the office of school clerk and trustee of Burr Oak Township for three years. Dr. L. B. Powell, drugs, was born near Frankfort, Ky., September 3, 1847. Remove to Illinois. In March, 1862, enlisted in Company D, Sixty-fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry; transferred to Company G, One Hundred and Twenty-sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry; was discharged in August, 1865, when he returned to Port Byron, Ill., and in 1869 went to Texas. In 1871 the Doctor was crossing the Staked Plains, at the head of the Concho River, when he, with his party of nine, was attacked by the Indians. Charles S. Vaughn, editor, was born in Medina, Ohio, September 18, 1815. He received an academic education in his native town. In the spring of 1863 he joined Battery F, Fourteenth New York Artillery. Was in the army of the Potomac under Burnside. He was captured at the battle of Weldon Railroad, and confined as a prisoner of war for four months at Pemberton, Libby and Belleville prisons. Engaged in the drug business in July, 1873. Was elected to the Kansas State Legislature in 1878. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., and the Odd Fellows lodges. La Grande, Oregon Ruth Viola Caton, 96, of La Grande, died Oct. 29, 2001, at the Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande. There will be a private family service. Mrs. Caton was born on June 11, 1905, to William and Hulda A. Stephens Callahan at Burr Oak, Kan. She married Glenn L. Caton on Nov. 21, 1948, in Montana.
