W. S. Chapman, of the firm of W. S. Chapman & Co, merchants, was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, October 17, 1847; enlisted in Company F, Sixteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and remained until the close of the war. He came to Belleville, Republic County, Kan., in 1872, and engaged in merchandising; and in 1874 started a branch store in Mankato, Jewell County. Mr. Chapman came to Mankato and erected a business building 23×60 feet, with a wareroom 16×60 foot, and now carries a stock of from $10,000 to $12,000. Elgin, Oregon Elroy H. Zeigler Jr., 87, of Elgin, died at his home Nov. 7. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Elroy was born Nov. 13, 1919, to Elroy and Neoma P. (Meek) Zeigler in Esbon, Kan. The family moved to Colorado, then to Langlois. Elroy went into the service in 1942 and served in the Army as a mail carrier. He married Grace L. Armstrong in January 1946 in Seattle. A. L. Marks, general merchant, was born in Prussia August 7, 1842. He came to America in June 1855, and located in Chicago, Ill. In 1861 he enlisted in Company K, Thirteenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted May 22, 1861, and was discharged June 24, 1865. Was taken prisoner May 17, 1864; was in prison at Cahaba, Ala., and Meridian, Miss., and was held until April, 1865. T. S. Kirkpatrick, Clerk of the District Court, was born in Wisconsin April 29, 1849; moved to Minnesota; thence to Jewell County Kan, in July, 1870, and took a homestead ten miles east of Mankato. He was elected Clerk of the District Court of Jewell County in the fall of 1880, and unanimously nominated and elected for the same position in the fall of 1882. Is a member of the K. of P. Was married in Mankato, January 8, 1881, to Miss Florence Hildreth. Mr. Kirkpatrick states that he has killed buffalo in Sewell County as late as 1873.

Andrew H. Miller, brother of Alvin W., is also closely identified with the business affairs of Formoso, where he is manager and treasurer of the Formoso Mercantile Company. He was born at Freeport in Stephenson County, Illinois, June 3, 1872, but, like his brother, was educated in the public schools of Jewell City.
