M. Winsor editor Mankato Review, has been one of the most prominent men in the county. He was born in Chautauqua County, N. Y., and March 20, 1840. He received only a common school education, yet a thorough one. He removed when eighteen to Illinois with his parents, and when twenty, went alone to Colorado, where he joined the First Colorado Cavalry in 1863, remaining in active service to the close of the war. Stanley, Edna Mae Dick Mrs. – Obituary

Edna Mae Stanley, 88, formerly of Baker City, died April 22, 2003, after a long struggle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Disposition was by cremation and interment will be at River View Cemetery. Edna Mae Dick was born Jan. 18, 1915, near Mankato, Kan., to May and John Dick. She grew up on a farm, rode horseback to high school, graduated at 16, and went to work at a dairy. While Carl Judge, the well known journalist, the owner and editor of the Beverly Tribune, at Beverly, Kansas, could ill be spared from the newspaper profession, there are other lines in which he was trained, and in which he would have undoubtedly gained recognition had he chosen to pursue them. Capt. John W. Enoch, farmer, P. O. Mankato, was born in Ohio, October 4, 1825. Removed to Northern Indiana, thence to Northwestern Missouri. Enlisted in the United States army in 1862, in Company C, Fifth Missouri Cavalry. He raised the Company for the service, and was elected its Captain. The George S. Bishop, second member of the firm of Case, Bishop & Heron, was born in Butler County, Ohio. He was a soldier in the United States Army; enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Sixty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1871 he came to Jewell County, Kan., and was elected County Surveyor of Jewell County; was elected to the Kansas State Legislature for three terms.

A. W. Mann, merchant, was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, September 4, 1845. He removed to Webster County, Iowa, and came to Jewell County, Kan., in May, 1870, and took a homestead two and a half miles from Burr Oak. He engaged in the drug business in Burr Oak in the fall of 1875.
