Biographical Sketch of Robert Waller Deering

Robert Waller Deering, born on June 27, 1865, in Hogansville, Georgia, was a prominent university dean and scholar. The son of Rev. John R. and Fannie Deering, he earned degrees from Vanderbilt University and the University of Leipzig. He served as an adjunct professor and then as a full professor of Germanic languages at Vanderbilt before becoming Dean of the Graduate Faculty at Western Reserve University in 1893. Deering was also an editor and translator of notable literary works.
