The Nacogdoche Tribe and the Mission of Guadalupe
The Mission of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, established in 1716 at the Nacogdoches village, serves as a historical anchor for the region’s tribal locations. This mission remained active until its abandonment in 1773. Antonio Gil Ybarbo’s settlement in 1779 near the old mission site marked the foundation of modern Nacogdoches, highlighting its continuity with the original Nacogdoche village. This relationship is further supported by evidence of ancient Indian mounds within the city, affirming Nacogdoches’ historical significance as the center of the Nacogdoche Tribe.
