Massacre of German Flats, New York
In November 1757, following the massacre at German Flats, New York, Sir William Johnson sent George Croghan to investigate why local Oneida and Tuscarora Indians had not warned the settlers of an impending French attack. Conaghquieson, an Oneida sachem, claimed they had relayed warnings, but the Germans dismissed them. Despite receiving intelligence prior to the attack, the Germans did not act on it, leading to tragic consequences. Some were saved only by the intervention of Indian allies who insisted on their evacuation.
