Biography of Sylvester Mowry
Sylvester Mowry graduated from West Point Academy in 1852, serving as a lieutenant in various military engagements before resigning in 1857 to manage the Mowry Mine in Arizona. His mine was confiscated during the Civil War due to his alleged southern sympathies, leading to imprisonment. After being released, he authored articles and books on Arizona’s political history, advocating controversial views on indigenous peoples. Mowry served as a Delegate to Congress but never took his seat, dying in London in 1871 while seeking funds for his mine.
