Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip
Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip, significant military installations during early American defense efforts, have remained unoccupied since 1871. Originally built by the French, Fort St. Philip was transformed by U.S. authorities in the early 19th century. Both forts saw action in the War of 1812 and the Civil War, particularly during Farragut’s bold 1862 naval assault, which led to their surrender. Today, the forts are situated in swampy areas, attracting visitors and wildlife, including alligators and rattlesnakes, amid challenging living conditions.
