Fort Adams and Newport’s Defensive Ruins

On July 4, 1799, Fort Adams was dedicated in Newport with a grand ceremony led by Major Tousard, marking its significance as a coastal defense facility. Originally established for military purposes in the 1776 Revolution, the fort evolved significantly until its completion in 1841. Under the supervision of General Totten and influenced by the uneasy relations with France, Fort Adams became a vital naval base for the United States. Today, remnants of Newport’s historic defenses, including Fort Dumplings and Goat Island’s fortifications, testify to the region’s military legacy.
