Andrew Roberts, born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1822, lost his parents early and trained as a tailor. In 1842, he emigrated to the United States, initially settling in New York. In 1851, he moved to San Francisco, where he faced multiple business setbacks due to fires but persisted in commerce. Later relocating to Portland, he found success in the clothing industry and became a respected community member and Mason. Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his wife and son, Roberts remained devoted to charity and service.
