Biography of John L. Curtis

John L. Curtis, born in 1827 in the East, became a prominent pioneer in Union County, Oregon. Orphaned young, he worked as a silver-plater before moving west, where he engaged in various occupations including mining and storekeeping. He discovered the Sanger mine and served in multiple public offices, including county sheriff and chief of police. A Jeffersonian Democrat and active in the Masonic fraternity, he married Almira Wells and had four children. Curtis is recognized for his contributions to the region’s development and community welfare.

Lockwood, F. E. – Obituary

F.E. Gene Lockwood, aged 85, passed away on June 15, 2007, in Enterprise, Oregon. Born on July 7, 1922, near Florence, he was educated in Tacoma, Washington. After serving in World War II, he earned a degree in Industrial Management through the GI Bill and spent 34 years at Boeing. Lockwood and his wife, Shirley, moved to Enterprise in 2004. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, grandchildren, sisters, and extended family. A Celebration of Life is planned in Washington.

M. B. Rees, a notable pioneer of Union County, Oregon, passed away unexpectedly at 84 on April 19, 1915, in Cove. Originally from Butler County, Ohio, he traveled to Oregon in the 1850s, eventually settling in the Grande Ronde in 1864. Known for his exemplary character and community involvement, Rees was a prominent figure in both local politics and agriculture, having successfully engaged in various enterprises throughout his life. He is survived by four sons and was married to America Frances Hall until her death.

McNulty, Viola Margaret “Vi” Devine Mrs. – Obituary

Viola Margaret “Vi” Devine McNulty, 96, passed away on August 8, 2005. Born on November 13, 1908, in Oklahoma, she was raised in Kansas City and became known for her vibrant personality and numerous interests. Vi worked in various professions, including waitress, dietitian, and teacher, and was an accomplished hobbyist, excelling in sewing, gardening, and more. Survived by two daughters, six grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, she was deeply loved and will be missed by family and friends. A private graveside service took place on August 18.
