James B. Summons, Jr. was a pioneer of Riverside, California, arriving in 1870 after earlier struggles as a Civil War soldier and merchant. Born in Cincinnati in 1845, he enlisted at 17, serving honorably in North Carolina. Post-war, he faced hostility in Virginia due to his Union sentiments, prompting his move west. He successfully established the Arlington nurseries and became an influential figure in Riverside, contributing to the community’s development. A dedicated Republican and member of the Congregational Church, he came to symbolize the tenacity of early settlers.
