Reeves, Marie A. Ragsdale Mrs. – Obituary

Marie A. Reeves, 84, of Nampa, Idaho, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 18, 2000, at a Nampa care center. Her funeral was Monday at the Flahiff Funeral Chapel at Caldwell, Idaho. Interment was at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell. Mrs. Reeves was born on Feb. 3, 1916, at Roanoke, Texas, to Henry and Maude Williams Ragsdale. She was reared and educated in the Midwest and graduated from high school in Kansas. On June 10, 1937, she married Clifford Reeves at Independence, Kan. Mathew Daugherty was born September 24, 1839, in the State of Arkansas, third son of James Daugherty. He attended school till he was ten years of age in Texas County, Missouri, after which (in 1849) he moved with his father to Denton County, Texas, where he went to the neighborhood schools till 1854, after which he entered McKenny College, Clarksville, Texas, and in 1857 commenced the study of law, which he continued until the outbreak of the war, when he enlisted in the Choctaw and Chickasaw mounted rifles. In the year 1819 the Synod of South Carolina resolved to establish a mission among the Southern Indians east of the Mississippi river. The Cherokees, Muskogee’s, Seminoles, Choctaws and Chickasaws then occupied Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. Rev. David Humphries offered to take charge of the intended mission. He was directed to visit the Indians, obtain their consent and select a suitable location. Rev. T. C. Stewart, then a young licentiate, offered himself as a companion to Mr. Humphries.
