Panamint Tribe
The Panamint Tribe, a division of the Shoshonean people, historically inhabited the Panamint Valley and surrounding areas in southeastern California, extending toward the Mohave River. In 1883, ethnographer Henshaw reported that approximately 150 individuals were still present, primarily near the mining town of Darwin. While their exact affiliations remain uncertain, they are tentatively linked with the Ute-Chemehuevi group of Shoshoneans. The Matarango are noted as a subdivision within this tribe.
