Slave Narrative of Lizzie Barnett

Lizzie Barnett, born into slavery in Tennessee, reflects on her life during and after the Civil War. She recalls her close bond with Miss Fanny Pennington, the woman who raised her alongside her family. Lizzie describes the hardships of slavery, the horrors of violence, and her experiences during the Yellow Fever outbreak in Memphis. After the war, she moved to Conway, Arkansas, built a modest home, and now relies on her pension and the kindness of neighbors. At about 100 years old, she looks forward to reuniting with her loved ones in the afterlife.
