Caughnawaga Tribe

Ahyouwaighs

The Caughnawaga Tribe, originally Iroquois, established a mission village on the Sault St Louis in Quebec under Jesuit guidance. Induced to settle near Montreal in 1668, they became known as French Praying Indians. Relocated to Sault St Louis in 1676, they resisted attempts by the Iroquois to return to their confederacy. By 1763, some moved to the Ohio River valley, with many adopting paganism yet retaining French ties. Their population grew, with significant members dispersing westward and by 1902, they had over 2,000 on the Caughnawaga Reservation.
