Owyhee County Its History, Towns, Industries
Owyhee County was established on December 31, 1863, from part of Boise County after Idaho was designated as a territory. Initially unexplored and occupied by Native Americans, it soon attracted gold miners following the discoveries of 1863, leading to the establishment of towns such as Silver City and Ruby City. The county’s economy relied heavily on mining, agriculture, and livestock. By the late 19th century, Owyhee’s cattle and sheep industries flourished alongside mining, though harsh winters later impacted cattle populations.
