Note:
The following incident took place near this cemetery in 1865. A soldier of the Confederate Army deserted and was making his way home when he met a 16 year old boy near the site of Hopewell church. While the rebel was talking to the boy, other soldiers came up and captured both of them. They charged the boy with aiding and abetting the deserter. (The deserter was an expert cannon gunner.) They hanged the boy and saved the deserter. After placing the rope around the boys nick they asked him if he had any thing to say before he died. The boy said, “Yes”, and I am told these were his last words. “I am not prepared to die. I am going straight to hell and I will be there to heap coals of fire upon your heads when you get there.” His body was buried in this cemetery. The names of both parties are withheld in order that the living may not be embarrassed.

I am also told that the grand father of the late Sash Kelly was the first one to be buried here in the late eighteenth century.
