Carol Thilenius, 73, of Juneau, Alaska, and formerly of La Grande, died May 6 in her sleep at home. No formal services are planned. Family may be contacted at dmthilenius@aol.com. Carol was born in 1935 in La Grande. She was a graduate of La Grande High School. According to her family, she was a teacher, professional handweaver and marine biologist of considerable skill. She taught handweaving at the University of Alaska Southeast for many years but more recently had become interested in geology, micro fossils and botany. Union, Oregon Deborah Lee (Brooks) Fifer, 57, of Fairbanks, Alaska, and formerly of Union and La Grande, died June 3. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. June 21 at the Eagle Valley Cemetery. Union County, Oregon Obituary Larry Eldridge “Ty” Beardsley, 70, formerly of the Grande Ronde Valley, died Aug. 15 in Polson, Mont. Union, Oregon Marlon Howard Maples, 50, formerly of La Grande and Union, died July 27 in Valdez, Alaska. Private family services were held July 31 at the Cremation Society of Alaska. Jim Lamson officiated. Memorial services will begin at 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at Valdez Glacier Campground. Phil Merioles will officiate. Marlon’s cremated remains will be scattered in Valdez. Tsimshian Tribe
Tsimshian Indians, Tsimshian People, Tsimshian First Nation (‘people of Skeena river’). The most important of the three main divisions of the Chimmesyan linguistic family, and that which gives it its name. In the strictest sense it designates the following closely related tribes or divisions living between Nass and Skeena rivers, north British Columbia: Kilutsai, Kinagingeeg, Kinuhtoiah, Kishpachlaots, Kitlani, Kitsalthlal, Kitunto, Kitwilgioks, Kitwilksheba, and Kitzeesh. To these are sometimes added the Kitzilas and Kitzimgaylum, who live farther up Skeena river, near the canyon, but speak the same dialect. Mary I. Todd Hopkins of Oregon
HOPKINS, Mary I. Todd9, (Morris8, Allen7, David6, Abraham5, Abraham4, Jonah3, Samuel2, Christopher1) was born in Quasqueton, Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1856, married about 1877, M. M. Hopkins, who was a physician. Before her marriage she taught school for a few years. After their marriage they moved to the state of Washington and afterwards to Alaska. She died in Oregon in 1905. Children: I. Zilpah, m. Elbert Blackmar and they reside in Cal. II. Jessie, m.(???)Hunt, and they reside in Alaska.
