Alabama Online Historical Newspapers

Historically, there have been over 2300 newspapers published in Alabama. This list represents those Alabama newspapers which have been digitally copied and placed online.

At present, there is limited free online access for digital newspapers which have been published in Alabama. Whether this is due from lack of available copies, or other reasons, is not known. Perhaps it reflects a lack of a central repository for historical Alabama newspapers? We can only hope that the amount available will continue to increase.

You will find over 500 Alabama newspapers are online at Newspapers.com. They are linked below with a $ sign to indicate that this is a subscription website. Unfortunately, they have the largest collection available online, dwarfing the available free Alabama newspapers online.

The first newspaper was produced in 1811 at Mobile Alabama. It was called the Mobile Centinel and was published at Fort Stoddert just before the War of 1812. In all, over 2300 newspapers have been published in Alabama under different titles.

    The Avondale Sun, a newspaper published by Avondale Mills for its employees, ran from 1924-2006. Over its 82 year history it published community and employee news, company information, and photographs. They had mills in Birmingham, Bevelle, Eufaula, Lafayette, Mignon, Ozark, Pell City, Stevenson, Sycamore, and Union Springs.
