Historically, there have been over 2300 newspapers published in Alabama. This list represents those Alabama online historical newspapers which have been digitally copied.
At present, there is limited free online access for digital newspapers which have been published in Alabama. Whether this is due from lack of available copies, or other reasons, is not known. Perhaps it reflects a lack of a central repository for historical Alabama newspapers? We can only hope that the amount available will continue to increase.
You will find over 500 Alabama newspapers are online at Newspapers.com. They are linked below with a $ sign to indicate that this is a subscription website. Unfortunately, they have the largest collection available online, dwarfing the available free Alabama newspapers online.
The first newspaper was produced in 1811 at Mobile Alabama. It was called the Mobile Centinel and was published at Fort Stoddert just before the War of 1812. In all, over 2300 newspapers have been published in Alabama under different titles.
If the county you are researching does not have any historical newspapers online yet, try a neighboring county, especially if your ancestor resided along the edges of the county, or there was a major town/city in the county next door.
