Virgil L. Calavan, 75, former Albany mayor who was active in civic affairs here for many years, died Friday morning in a Corvallis hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Calavan was the former owner of a drug store in East Albany which is now Lammers’ Pharmacy. After selling the East Albany store he operated Mason’s Drug Store in downtown Albany, which is now owned by Gerald Steele. He had lived in Corvallis since 1946.
A 1911 graduate of Oregon State College, Mr. Calavan was a school principal in eastern Linn County before he opened his first drug store in Albany.
He was elected as an Albany City councilman in 1926 and served as mayor from 1928 to 1932. In addition, he served for 25 years on the Albany School Board; was president of the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis club; and severed for several years on the Willamette Memorial Park Board.
Mr. Calavan’s first wife, the former Vida Nanney, died in 1944. In 1946 he married the former Lona Nanney Locke, who survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Edith Creighton of Albany; a brother, Roy Calavan of Salem; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral home, with the Rev. Morton Booth and the Rev. Perry Avery officiating. Burial will be in Willamette Memorial Park.
The family suggests that any remembrance be in the form of contributions to the Heart Fund.
