Brownfield, Haynes W., Dr. – Obituary

Haynes W. Brownfield, 60-year-old physician and surgeon, one of Anthony’s most prominent professional men for the past 35 years, passed away at his home shortly after 1:30 o’clock yesterday morning. He had been bedfast for the past six months.

He had made himself vitally useful to the community and the community esteemed him not only as a doctor but as a most public-spirited citizen. Funeral services will be held this afternoon, Thursday, at 2:30 at the Gem Mortuary, with Rev. Victor A. Major of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Dr. Brownfield was born October 24, 1879, at Buffalo, LaRue County, Kentucky. The county seat of LaRue County is Hodgenville, a town best known to fame for the fact that nearby stands the log cabin, now carefully preserved, in which Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809. That cabin is not far form the birthplace of Dr. Brownfield. The Brownfield family has lived there since the time of the Lincoln family.

During his boyhood, Dr. Brownfield attended the public schools of Buffalo, Ky., continuing his education in high school and the East Lynn College of that place. He graduated from college with the bachelor of science degree in 1897 and then entered the Louisville Hospital College of Medicine. He took his M.D. degree there in 1901 and in the same year came to Kansas. For two years he practiced at Valley Center, and since 1904 had been located in Anthony, doing a general medical and surgical practice.

He was a member of the Harper County and Kansas State Medical associations, Anthony Chamber of Commerce, was a past patron of Valley Center Order of the Eastern Star, member of Valley Center Lodge No. 23, A.F. & A.M., and belonged to the Christian Church.

He married at Wichita in October, 1907, Miss Ina Lee, of Anthony. At the present time she is Harper County register of deeds. Surviving him in the immediate family are his wife, Ina; and a sister, Mrs. Robert G. Smith, of Des Moines, Iowa.
