Barbara Ruth Berland, 92, of Pendleton, died Feb. 25, 2004. She was born Aug. 31, 1911 to Burton and Mabel (Gray) Kelsay in Burns.
After graduating from Redmond High School in 1931, she lived with an aunt when she was selected as a princess for the Fourth of July Celebration in Enterprise. She married Marvin “Jake” Berland of Paradise in 1933 and together they ranched in Wallowa County for the next 30 years.
She did office work for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service for 10 years, served on the Deer Creek School Board and substitute taught. She moved to Pendleton in 1973 and was an active member of the Christian Science Church.
Survivors include daughters Beverly Davidson and Barbara Prince, both of Pendleton; sister Patricia Hepburn of Orlando, Fla.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Jake” Berland.
At the deceased’s request, there were no funeral services. Her cremains will be buried next to her husband in Enterprise at a later date.
