Roy L. Sawyer, 88, of John Day, and a former Baker City resident, died Aug. 9, 2002, at Valley View Assisted Living Center.
His funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the John Day Seventh-Day Adventist Church, with Pastor Rod Bieber of the church officiating. Interment will be at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens in Boise.
Roy was born Dec. 27, 1913, at Hailey, Idaho, to Alma C. and Rose V. Sawyer. Roy spent his youth in the small town of Cascade, Idaho. He and his brother, Floyd, worked on the Cascade Dam.
Roy served in the Second World War in the South Pacific. He married Kathyrn Ginley in 1953 in Nevada. After her death in 1970 he married Frieda. He worked for many years for the sawmill in Baker City. He cared for his mother until her death in 1976.
Roy was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for many years. He will be remembered for his jovial spirit and sweet disposition. The family wishes to thank the caring people at the Valley View Center for their kindness to our uncle in his last years.
Roy is survived by five nephews, Deane Thompson of Fruitland, Idaho, T.S. “Bud,” Dan and David Thompson, all of Boise, and Kerry Wayne Thompson of California; four nieces, Patsy Boutwell of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Swank of Malad City, Idaho, Susan Cunningham of Boise and Dorothy Hanau of Arizona.
Roy was preceded in death by his wives, Kathy and Frieda; his mother and father; two sisters, Helen Thompson Hay and Anne Lorena Sawyer; two brothers, Clyde and Floyd Sawyer; and three nephews, James, Norman and Fred Thompson.
