Haines, Baker County, Oregon
Vernon E. Shull, 88, died April 9, 2006, at his home in Haines.
His graveside memorial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Haines Cemetery. Chaplain Assistant Sgt. Daggett from the La Grande Armory will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception after the service at the Haines United Methodist Church.
Vernon was born on Dec. 26, 1917, and raised at Glen Elder, Kan., the sixth of eight children of James and Sarah Shull.
After eight years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he settled in Oregon with his wife, Normagene. In 1949, he began a temporary job with the state Highway Department as a rear chairman on a survey crew at The Dalles.
Six years later, he left The Dalles, after completing The Dalles bypass project, to oversee other construction jobs as a senior resident with the state Highway Department. Vernon retired in 1980 to settle near his daughter, Sally, and her children.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Normagene Shull of Haines; a daughter, Beth Koljonen; grandchildren, Kelli Perkins Rust and Matt Perkins; and great-grandson Blake Rust.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah; siblings, Raymond, George, Craig, Emma, Ellen, Opal and Elva; and his beloved daughter, Sara “Sally” Perkins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics or the Haines United Methodist Church through Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
