Vernon Antone Morris, 85, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 25, 2004, in Prineville.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Coles Funeral Home. Military honors will be performed by Baker City AMVETS, No. 1874. Visitations will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Private interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Morris was born in 1919 to Sam and Oradelia Chmidling Morris in Baker City. Vernon was reared on his grandfather Chmidling’s farm north of Baker City. He was a member of a family of six brothers and three sisters. He attended Baker City schools, graduating from Baker High School in 1939.

Vernon served in the Pacific region in World War II, the Philippines, New Guinea and Luzon. His brothers served in the European Theater including Africa, Sicily, France, Germany and Austria.

After the war, Vernon worked for Clyde Ward, Bar C Bar Ranch, and the Sullivan Ranch at Hereford.

Due to poor health he had been living at Sandy’s Care Home in Baker City and later at Prineville.

Survivors include his sister, Alice Bacon, and her husband, Leonard, of Baker City; brother, Bill Morris, and his wife, Laura, of Davis, Calif.; one nephew, three nieces, three great-nephews and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Van Fund through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
