Mrs. G.M. Cannon Passes To Rest

Mrs. George M. Cannon, pioneer of Wallowa County for 51 years, died at her home in Joseph, Saturday morning, Dec. 22, 1934, following a long illness.

Funeral services were held in Joseph at 10 o’clock Monday morning at the Methodist Church. The body was taken to Lost Prairie where services were conducted at the Lost Prairie schoolhouse with Rev. G.R. Archer of the Joseph Methodist Church officiating at both places. Five of the pallbearers at Lost Prairie were former pupils of Mrs. Cannon, who taught the first school in the north end of the county in 1888 and 1891.

The five former pupils were Jim, Jack and Al Cole, John Holloway and Dale N. Estes, and there were three other pallbearers, James Fordice, William Fordice and Earl Botts.

Flora Almira Stanley was born in Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, Jan. 15, 1870. She resided in Colorado until she was 13 years old, when she moved with her parents and brother to Joseph. The family settled on upper Prairie Creek, where they resided for about a year, before moving to Joseph.

Mrs. Cannon helped set the type on the first paper, the Chieftain, published in the county under S.A. Heckethorn, who owned the paper at that time. She later worked for F.M. McCully in the printing business.

She was united in marriage to George M. Cannon of Lost Prairie, in Joseph, Nov. 26, 1891, on Thanksgiving Day. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Cannon established their home on Mr. Cannons homestead on Lost Prairie and resided there for 34 pleasant years. They then moved to Joseph to care for Mrs. Cannon’s aged mother, Mrs. Mary E. Stanley, who died Dec. 29, 1926. After her death they remained in Joseph until the present time.

She leaves to mourn her death, her husband and the following children; Mrs. Christal McKinnon of Geer, Idaho; Everett L. Cannon of Flora; Mrs. Edna Lindley of Lewiston, Idaho; J. Verene Cannon of Salem; Mrs. Goldie Kuhn of Paradise; Mrs. Sylvia Wing of Goldendale, Wash.; and 17 grandchildren; also one brother, C.N. Stanley of Joseph, and a host of friends. All the children were at home when their mother passed away.
