C.E., etc.; Chairman and Managing Director, The North-Eastern Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., Wallsend-on-Tyne and Sunderland; b. 12 July 1856; s. of John Ranson Hunter and Mary Isabella Dunliffe Hunter; educ.: Royal Academy, Inverness; privately; Wedgewood Institute, Burselem. Apprenticed to Barker & Cope General Engineers at Kidsgrove Stoke-on-Trent; joined the Northeastern Marine Eng. Co., Ltd., at their Dunserland works, 1880; after a short time in the shops, went to sea for two years, taking his Chief Engineers Certificate, after which he was appointed on the Staff of the North-Eastern Marine Eng. Co. at their Wallsend works; General Manager, 1898; took an active part in the Volunteer Movement being instrumental in forming two companies in Wallsend; held the rank of Captain in one of the battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers; during the war held appointments on various Government Committies, including the Board of Trade Shipping and Ship-building Comm.
