Whilkut Tribe
The Whilkut Indians are a small Athapascan group located in the upper Redwood Creek valley of northern California. Although linguistically similar to the Hupa, they maintained distinct cultural and religious identities and had no political ties with them. Frequent conflicts arose with white settlers in their territory. Following the establishment of the Hupa Reservation, many Whilkut survivors returned to their ancestral lands after 1870, with around 10 to 12 families still residing there today. The Chilula people inhabit the area below them on Redwood Creek.
