Nipmuc Indian Chiefs and Leaders
Nanepashemet was a notable Nipmuc chief in early Massachusetts, residing in Medford, whose elevated home served as both residence and fort until his death around 1619. His widow, after marrying Webcowit, became the Squawsachem, and their children included significant leaders like Sagamore James. Tom Nepanet, a Christian Nipmuc, played a crucial role during King Philip’s War, acting as an emissary for the Massachusetts colonists and aiding in prisoner negotiations and military engagements, demonstrating loyalty and valor in a time of conflict.
