Biography of General William Lenoir

General William Lenoir, born May 20, 1751, in Virginia, was of French Huguenot descent. He settled in North Carolina, becoming an active participant in the American Revolution, repelling Cherokee attacks and fighting at Kings Mountain, where he was wounded. Lenoir served as Major General of the militia for eighteen years and held various civil positions, including Speaker of the State Senate. Known for his integrity and hospitality, he died on May 6, 1839, and was buried at Fort Defiance, his final residence.
