CHRISTOPHER HUNTER: (1675-1757), physician and antiquary, born in July 1675, was the only son of Thomas Hunter, of Medonsley, Durham, by his second wife, Margaret Readshaw (Surtees, Durham, ii. 289). He was educated at the free grammar school of Kepyr in Houghton-le-Spring, Durham. In 1692 he was admitted pensioner of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and became a favourite pupil of Thomas Baker (1656-1740) (q.v.), whose sister Margaret was the wife of John Hunter, Christopher’s eldest brother. LEWIS BOUDINOT HUNTER: surgeon, b. in Princeton, N.J., 9 October 1804; d. in Philadephia 6 June 1887. He was the son of Andrew Hunter. Was graduated at Princeton in 1824, and at the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1828. On 3 March 1871, was a medical director with the rank of Commodore, and retired.

MISS CATHERINE STEWART HUNTER: who was born in New York, is a descendant of Capt. Elijah Hunter, of New York. She was a daughter of Dr. Abraham Thew and Adeline Morrison Hunter; granddaughter of Ezra and Rachel Thew Hunter; gr.granddaughter of Elijah and Anna Drake Hunter. Elijah Hunter, 1775, was Lieutenant in Capt. Daniel Mills’ Company, Col. James Holmes’ Regiment, and was Captain of grenadiers at the Battle of White Plains. He served as a delegate from Westchester County to the Assembly. He was born at New Castle, 1749, and died, 1815, at Mount Pleasant (Sing Sing).
John M. Hunter was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, May 2, 1842. His parents died when he was five years old, and he lived with Mr. Jacob Hershbarger until he reached his eleventh year, then with his brother-in-law, Rev. William Baldwin. He was educated in the common schools of Indiana, and came to this county in 1857, and early in 1861 went to Clark county, Iowa. WILLIAM HUNTER: was Assistant Secretary of the State. His son, Lieut. H. C. Hunter, of the United States Navy, died at Barcelona, Spain, in 1873. Revolutionary officers of the name are Alexander, Daniel, Ephriam and James, of Pennsylvania; David of South Carolina; James of North Carolina; Andrew of New Jersey; Elijah and John, of New York.
GEORGE HUNTER: one of the earliest residents of New York City, married Ruth, the widow of John Broome, in 1777. Mr. Hunter died in 1799. They had one son, born 4th August 1788. He was named John Hunter. He was the Hunter of Hunter’s Island. He became very distinguished, and was well known to many of the last generation. In a convention to amend the Constitution of this State, John Hunter was the oldest member present.

ROBERT HUNTER: (fl. 1750-1780), portrait painter, a native of Ulster, studied under the elder Pope, and had a considerable practice in Dublin about the middle of the eighteenth cen tury. He modelled his tone of colouring on the painting of old masters. His portraits were excellent likenesses, if not of the first rank in painting. He had an extensive practice until the arrival of Robert Home in 1780, who attracted the leaders of fashion. (1743-1809), professor of Divinity at Edinburgh, born in Edinburgh in 1743, was the eldest son of Andrew Hunter of Park, writer to the signet, of the Abbotshill branch of the Hunters of Hunterston, Ayrshire. His mother was Grizel, daughter of General Maxwell of Cardoness in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright.
